Christ sacrificed himself for His people and through His sacrifice humans have the ability to attain salvation and this theory got further clearing and explanation by the Church and scholars of the various times, leading to the many atonement theories, all with the potential to elaborate on the reparation for sin. Through the atonement, the basic idea is to get closer to God and be united with Him and the path to that is through Christ.
